“And Mary kept all these things,
reflecting on them in her heart.” – Luke 2:19
You know that moms keep everything, right? As we grow up there are pictures, art projects, report cards, Christmas ornaments (macaroni ones especially!) and anything else they feel important to hang on to as a reminder of our growing up. These things usually “show up” at the most inopportune times like a high school graduation party. It’s who they are and we love them for it!
Mary, it appears, is a very typical mother. She “kept all these things” related to her child as well. Of course, the gospel here means the events that happened. These events are what Mary holds in her heart. She not only holds them, she”reflects” upon them. She most likely was trying to make sense of it all. Oh, how her life had changed! This child changes everything.
Is this not true for all parents? A child changes everything. The wonder of it all. Who will this child become? What type of person will they be? Will I be a good parent – a good mother, a good father? Mary must have certainly thought some of these things. And we know the rest of the story…there was much that Mary would endure.
Today on this feast of Mary as the mother of God. We give thanks to her gift of motherhood. Her openness to this wonderful child and the challenges he would bring to her. And, through it all, she nurtured and loved Jesus as a mother keeping “all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.”
