Advent Reflection – The Fourth Sunday of Advent

“Mary set out
and traveled to the hill country in haste
to a town of Judah,
where she entered the house of Zechariah
and greeted Elizabeth.” – Lk 1:39-40

AAA has estimated that nearly 98.6 million Americans will be traveling this Christmas season.  That is a lot of folks on the roads and in the air!

People may feel a bit like Mary in the Gospel today.  Often there is a lot of haste, worry, and much anxiety when traveling.  These things can color our whole experience, especially if everything doesn’t go well – delays, traffic slow-ups, road work, etc.  However, it is good to remember the  joy that we bring to those we visit.  Our very presence is all that is needed. Though we may not be the mother of Jesus as Mary was, each of us does hold the presence of the Lord within us.  And it is that presence of the Lord within us that hopefully will shine through us to be a beacon to those we meet.

Lord, help us to let your light shine through us as we celebrate your birth.  As the star in the sky guided the wise men to find you in the manger, may your light within us lead others to you in all that we do and say.  Amen.
