Advent Reflection – Day 5

“Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them
will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.”  Lk 7:24

I don’t know a lot about building a foundation, but one thing I do know is that it is VERY important!  Without a good foundation no building or structure will last.  It may for a short period of time but not for the long haul.

In our reading today, Jesus gives us direction on how to build a strong foundation for our spiritual life.  It involves two things – listening and acting.  Both of these are extremely important and not always easy to do.  Thus taking time for prayer and meditation is essential to building this foundation.  It is NOT a luxury.  Setting aside some time in our day to listen to the words of Jesus and reflecting upon them helps us to set our path for the day.  It helps us to be aware of what God asks of us and how we should act or be throughout the day.

An example for me is getting physically fit.  I have learned throughout the years exercises and activities that are good for me, walking, aerobic exercise, racquetball and, my favorite, golf.  Though “knowing” that these are good for me, actually doing them is the real test.  If I want to get fit I must get off the couch, so to speak, and get moving!  Our spiritual life is very much the same.  So, today let’s plan to put that faith into action (with God’s help, of course).

God, we need your help.  Open our hearts to listen to your word and give us the strength to act upon that word today.  Amen
