Advent Reflection – Day 1

Scripture: May the Lord make you increase and abound in love
for one another and for all… 1 Thes 3:12

How difficult it is for this to happen! And it doesn’t happen overnight! It is a step by step process…beginning small and then growing day by day. Where does one begin in order for our love to increase?

St. Theresa of Avila writes of those who enter the “first, lower rooms” of the Interior Castle, “For even though they are very involved in the world, they have good desires and sometimes, though only once in a while, they entrust themselves to our Lord and reflect on who they are, although in a rather hurried fashion. During the period of a month they will sometimes pray, but their minds are then filled with business matters which ordinarily occupy them. They are so attached to these things that where their treasure lies their heart goes also. Sometimes they do put all these things aside, and the self-knowledge and awareness that they are not proceeding correctly in order to get to the door is important. Finally, they enter the first, lower rooms…they have done quite a bit just by having entered.” (Interior Castle I:1,8)

As we begin this Advent season may the Lord “increase and abound” in our hearts and all hearts of the world.

Father in heaven,
our hearts desire the warmth of your love
and our minds are searching for the light of you Word.
Increase our longing for Christ our Savior
and give us the strength to grow in love,
that the dawn of his coming
may find us rejoicing in his presence and welcoming the light of his truth.

  1. A beautiful reflection and a timely reminder that in this season that gets so busy with material matters, it is also a time to reach out in love and generosity. A time to let our treasure be led by our hearts.
